Redwood Coffee Table

Coffee Table

Giant Redwood

The wood for this table was selected on a wood finding quest in California. The Redwood for this table was recovered from logging remains left in the forest over 100 years ago.

Once at the shop the table top slab and burl base were stored and allowed to air dry for over 5 years. Periodically the removing bits of bark were meticulously removed with dental picks. This insured the wood had become stable and all of the bark, stones, and dirt were removed from the crevasses before finishing.

Once the wood was seasoned the final finishing process could begin. First the burl base was sandblasted, and then fine sanded, and a satin finish was applied. The top was planed flat and sanded to a very fine degree after which multiple types of finishes were applied to bring out the luster and depth of the wood grain.

Adirondack Console Table #4

Adirondack Console Table

Butterflly Joints

Perhaps I am jumping ahead posting a table that is not finished yet, however the top has come out really great and I am excited to share it. This table top has been finished with great care to induce an iridescent quality where the color and grain hypnotically shift depending on the lighting and direction of view.

The natural edge maple top has been carefully cut to preserve the full circle of the growth rings. Utilizing traditional wood joinery; there are two contrasting butterfly keys of black walnut that accent and stabilize the wood.

I finish the top slab first and based on the final results of the wood grain and texture I then choose a base. Often I finish the top wood slabs and return them to inventory until I discover materials for a base that works well with the top. I general do not like the practice of screwing on a generic pair of store bought midcentury modern legs to a natural slab of wood. 1800s industrial iron legs I do like.
